Wellness

Wellness is more than being free from illness, it is an active process of making choices towards a healthy and purpose filled life. Our Wellness program is rooted in fostering healthy connections, increasing education, breaking down barriers to resources, and giving support to help improve wellness.

Gateway's Wellness Philosophy

Wellness is more than being free from illness. It is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices towards a healthy and purpose filled life.

The wellness process is multifaceted and unique to each person.

Every individual deserves access to the resources and social support needed to make these changes.

In addiction, we give up everything for one thing. In recovery, we give up one thing for everything." - Anonymous

Our Wellness program:

  • Is rooted in agency buy-in and written policy.
  • Fosters healthy connections with self and others.
  • Increases education, awareness, and support around the eight dimensions of wellness.
  • Removes barriers that impede efforts towards improving wellness for Gateway’s patients, employees, and their surrounding community.

The 8 Dimensions of Wellness

Each of the 8 Dimensions of Wellness contribute to our own sense of wellness and quality of life.  Each area affects and overlaps with the others. Sometimes, one may be more prominent than others, but neglecting any dimension for too long can have negative consequences for our overall health.

  • Emotional: Coping effectively with life and creating satisfying relationships
  • Environmental: Good health though pleasant environments that support well being
  • Financial: Satisfaction with current and future financial situations
  • Intellectual: Identifying ways to expand knowledge, abilities and skills
  • Occupational: Personal satisfaction and enrichment from one’s work
  • Physical: Recognizing the need for physical activity, proper nutrition, sleep
  • Social: Developing a sense of connection, community, belonging and a support system
  • Spiritual: Expanding our sense of purpose and meaning in life

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) created the Wellness Initiative to help people with mental and/or substance use disorders - and all people - live longer, healthier lives by focusing on the eight dimensions of wellness that connect all aspects of behavioral health.
